Rocks are solid and sturdy and are used in industry for a variety of purposes. However, in order to attain the advantages presented by the rock, or to access what is concealed beneath it, a mechanism must be employed for drilling or cutting the rock. For this, we use a rock driller. The choice of rock driller will depend very much on the rock, its nature, its angle, and its position. Rock drilling is what makes industries such as mining and construction possible.

Common Types of Rock Drilling Machines
There are three predominant types of rock drillers, namely the rotary drill, the down-the-hole drill, and the hammer drill.
Utilizing a rotary drill, the driving rig furnishes requisite torque and pressure, initiating an incision and rock penetration. The motion of the rotary drill is constant and the pressure is even for it to burrow down into the rock.
Compressed air is commonly directed to blow during this process, ensuring unobstructed drill movement by clearing debris in its path. Rotary drills find frequent application in the excavation of substantial boreholes and in operations involving soft to moderately compact rock substrates.
Down-the-hole drilling uses compressed air to press the drill into and through the rock. The piston will connect with the drill bit directly and the cylinder will then guide the drill in a straight line as it drills. It is the drill known for the straightest drilling and is best suited for large hard rock formations.
Hammer drilling involves the impact of the pistons connecting with the drill bit but through a drill pipe and shank adaptor. The percussion of the hammer drill will also propel the drill in rotation. The hammer drill is most appropriate for creating smaller, relatively shallow holes, particularly effective when dealing with tougher rock varieties.
